Welcome to the Hoylandswaine Arts Group website!

Established in 2005, The Hoylandswaine Arts Group evolved from its predecessor the Hoylandswaine Music Group, formed in 1988 to promote professional music events in and around Hoylandswaine. Since then the group has broadened its objectives to include all the arts disciplines, while retaining its core aim of bringing professional and amateurs to work together in partnership. In the past the group has been successful in raising grant aid to allow this work to flourish.

John Roddam Spencer Stanhope is the focus for Hoylandswaine Arts over the next few years.

Hoylandswaine Arts is currently engaged in working in partnership with the Parish Church Council of Hoylandswaine in the restoration of a wall painting situated on the East wall of the St John the Evangelist Church in Hoylandswaine, South Yorkshire. The wall painting was designed and painted by the local artist John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, entitled the Ascendency of Christ. It complements a stunning stained glass window made in the William Morris factory and probably designed by Edward Burne-Jones, given by the Spencer Stanhope family in memory of Roddam’s sister Louisa who died in 1867. The wall painting was painted over during church refurbishment in 1961. Hoylandswaine Arts is currently seeking grants, principally from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to restore the painting to its former glory, subject to the approval of the Diocese of Wakefield in which the parish is situated.
