O Can Ye Sew Cushions?

Wednesday February 27 at 1030 am

An open meeting for anyone interested in working as a community on a piece of needlework to be hung permanently in the church as a reminder of the Roddam project.

Or even thread a needle?
We are now well into the delivery phase of our Heritage-Lottery-funded Roddam Project. By the time you read this, (January) we will have started the recording of the oral history and we hope many people who remember the painting from their childhood will have shared their stories with Rachel Smith, a final year student at Sheffield Hallam University, who under the guidance of Grace Tebbutt is preparing her questions and setting up the interviews.
Also under way is the designing and making of a new stained glass window for the west end of Hoylandswaine church. The children in Hoylandswaine and Cawthorne primary schools have been working during November and December with Art in the Park on their own interpretation of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and we look forward to the exhibition of their completed work.
But the jewel in the crown could well be a piece of needlework to hang permanently in the church. What that will be and how it will look depends very much on those of you who can wield needle and thread. And so we invite you to an open meeting to discuss what and how the work will be achieved. If your skill is in design, we’d like to hear from you. If you prefer to turn design into embroidery or tapestry or patchwork, we’d like to hear from you. Let’s not beat about the bush: we are making history here. It’s getting on for 150 years since Roddam painted ‘The Ascendency of Christ’ and here we are, very close to seeing it again after 50 years in the dark. It would be good to leave something for future generations to mull over and to ask the same questions we ourselves are asking about Roddam and his family – why did they do it? So let’s get started!

This last Wednesday in February is the regular monthly Communion Service at 9 45 am, to which anyone wanting to come to the meeting is also invited. (so the vestry will be warm!)
